Lagos Jan 26, (THEWILL) – The police on Tuesday painted a clearer picture on how Otunba Dipo Dina, the Action Congress (AC) governorship candidate in the 2007 election in Ogun State was murdered. The politician was murdered on Monday night in Sango Ota, Ogun State by yet to be identified gunmen.

Ogun State Police Commissioner, Mr. Abdusalam Daura speaking in a news conference in Abeokuta said Dina was killed on his way to a river for spiritual cleansing. Daura also said the police would continue its investigations into the killing and would not rule out assassination or robbery as motive for the crime.

Narrating his command’s findings, Mr. Daura said a woman who he simply referred to as Funmi, who is said to be a spiritualist and the deceased driver were with him in a Black Toyota Camry vehicle when the attack occurred. He said Funmi and his driver informed officers that they were driving to a river on Atan-Agbara-Idiroko road at about 10 p.m. when a bus suddenly sprung out and crossed their car near Winners Chapel on Idiroko Road in Ota, Ogun State.

Continuing, Daura said four gunmen jumped out of the bus and ordered the driver, Funmi and Dina out of the car, when they were ordered back into the car, as they about to enter, Dina engaged them in an argument, which infuriated them and made them shoot him in the abdomen, which eventually led to his death.

A gunman drove the Camry from scene taking Funmi and the driver with him but dropped them off somewhere down the road, Mr. Daura added.

The death of the politician sent shock waves around political circles nationwide.

The police have said they would apprehend his killers even though it has had a very poor record in apprehending perpetrators of murders in the past. The murders of Chief Bola Ige and many other assassinations in Nigeria have still not been cracked.

Most political analysts believe the killing was politically motivated.

Meanwhile, Vice President Goodluck Jonathan has given the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Ogbonnaya Onovo one week to find the gunmen.
