Benin City Jan 23, (THEWILL) – Chief Tony Anenih and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), suffered a symbolic and crushing defeat in Edo State on Saturday at the Etsako Central Constituency re-rerun election for the state’s House of Assembly slot.

Governor Adams Oshiomhole’s Action Congress (AC) candidate in the election, Mr. Oghuma Johnson defeated PDP’s Chris Umogbai in an area that was a stronghold of Chief Anenih and the PDP. The election saw Chief Michael Ogiadomhe lose in his ward in an election that many observers said was free, fair and peaceful.

In all the AC won in eight wards; 1, 2, 3, 6, 7,8, 9, and 10; while the PDP won in only two; 4 and 5.

The AC scored a total of 7,884 votes while the PDP got 3712. ANPP got 1 and DPP got 6. Declaring the results, INEC returning officer, Mr. Glenn Ukomadu said, "This was an election keenly contested by three candidates. 29,971 were the total of registered voters in Etsako Central Local Government. The AC scored 7,884 votes; ANPP scored 1; DPP scored 6; while the PDP scored 3,712 votes. The number of rejected votes was 2,146 while 13,337 were the total votes cast in this election.

"Oghuma Johnson is hereby declared the winner of the election signed this day."

The police arrested three persons (Anslem Longe, Akande Francis and Solomon Evbogbai) for impersonating INEC officials in Ward 8. N500, 000 naira was found on them after their arrest.

With this victory, Governor Adams Oshiomhole and the AC have consolidated their hold on Edo State and have made it more difficult for Chief Anenih and the PDP to make a come back any time soon. The balance of power in House of Assembly is now even between both parties.
