Lagos (THEWILL) - The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has arrested some ex officials of the government of Sokoto State over their alleged involvement in the N15 billion naira embezzlement probe of the former governor of the state, Dr. Attahiru Bafarawa.

Dr. Bafarawa was arrested on Wednesday at the Sheraton Hotels and Towers in Abuja.

Those arrested by the commission are former commissioner of water resources, Isa Achida, former commissioner of finance, Aishatu Binji, Sambo Bello, former permanent secretary ministry of local government affairs, Salihu Bakwai, former chairman of education resuscitation committee, Adamu Gurori, and Salihu Maiduhu Gumi, a businessman and associate of the former governor.

The anti graft commission said it was uncovered series of frauds perpetuated by Bafarawa while he has governor. It accused him of withdrawing more than $3 billion naira belonging to the state for personal use, and also acquiring the state government’s shares in the United Bank For Africa for himself and his brother, Nasir.

An Abuja court on Thursday said the commission could detain the former governor pending his arraignment.

The commission has said it will file charges.
