San Francisco (THEWILL) - The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested and detained Dr. Attahiru Bafarawa, a former governor of Sokoto State.

EFCC's spokesman Mr. Femi Babafemi said he was arrested at about 3.pm at the Sheraton Hotels and Towers Abuja after several weeks of manhunt.

Bafarawa, also a former presidential candidate in the last election was arrested for his alleged role in the misappropriation of more than N5 billion naira during his eight year tenure (1999-2007) as chief executive of Sokoto State.

The EFCC said it discovered that some of the looted funds were diverted to his presidential campaign organization. The commission also alleged he used one of his personal accounts to siphon some of the funds saying he also awarded contracts to his wife, friends, brother-in-law and cronies without due process.

The governor was arrested in the company of other ANPP party members, including former military Head of State General Mohammadu Buhari.

The commission did not say when charges will be filed in court against the former governor.
