ABUJA, January 19, (THEWILL) - The House of Representatives today urged the executive arm of government to initiate a total overhaul of the laws relating to the pricing of petroleum products in the country.

It also announced the adjournment of plenary till Tuesday, 31st January 2012 to enable its standing committees attend to the 2012 budget proposal.

The House recommendation was consequent upon the adoption of the report of the ad-hoc committee set up by the chamber to interface with the executive and organised labour over the impasse generated by the federal government’s removal of fuel subsidy.

Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Patrick Ikhariale (PDP, Edo) had last Tuesday submitted the report on the floor chamber during the plenary session presided over by House Speaker Aminu Waziri Tambuwal.

While adopting the report Thursday after consideration at the Committee of the Whole, which was presided over by the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Emeka Ihedioha, the House, said the laws governing the pricing of petroleum products should be reviewed and streamlined to forestall a repetition of the crisis witnessed during the last protests and strike.

The ad hoc committee on interface had recommended “That all laws relating to the pricing of petroleum products in the country be reviewed and properly streamlined to prevent repetition f the crisis situation the country has just witnessed.”

Giving reasons for the adjournment of plenary session by the House, Deputy Speaker Emeka Ihedioha explained that the period is to enable its various committees of the House to concentrate on the 2012 Appropriation Act.

“This is to enable the House work on the budget for early passage in February,” he said.
