Labour Calls Off Nationwide Strike

SAN FRANCISCO, January 16, (THEWILL) - The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have called off their week-long nationwide strike and directed workers to return to work on Tuesday, 17 January, 2012. 

The announcment was made Monday afternoon in Abuja by President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Abdulwaheed Omar.

Labour unions said they would explore dialogue with the federal government using the Justice Alfa Belgore Committee, as both parties and government continue talks on the deregulation of the downstream sector.

In a press conference announcing their decision to call of the strike,
the Trade Union Congress President, Comrade Peter Esele, said all stakeholders in the coalition were consulted before the decision was taken to cancel the strike.

Esele thanked the general public for rallying behind labour.
