PRESIDENCY: WHAT MANNER OF ACCEPTANCE OF RESIGNATIONS

Sir,

PRESIDENCY: WHAT MANNER OF ACCEPTANCE OF RESIGNATIONS

At times I feel there is no system in the present Nigeria governance. A minister or special aide to the President would just wake up one morning, drop in her/his resignation letter with ‘immediate effect’ and the President ‘gladly’ accepts. Furthermore, the idea of dumping the ruling party for another showcase that PDP and the President are not doing well. All this shows that without notice, the President himself can wake up one day and tell Nigerians that he has resigned from office; without properly handing over to his deputy?

Professor Dorothy Akunyili, a Federal Minister appointed by the President, attended the usual weekly Federal Executive Council meeting. As the spokesperson for the federal government she took her usual turn to brief the media the outcome of the meeting and as a passing shot, she announced that she has just tendered her letter of resignation (without the requisite notice?) from the Party and cabinet of President Goodluck Jonathan and that the President has  (immediately) accepted. She quitted PDP for APGA to enable her contest for the Senate. What a fantastic prose!

Again, just few days ago, the Presidential Adviser on Niger Delta (and a former Managing Director of the NDDC), Mr. Timi Alaibe, tendered his letter of resignation and further announced that the President had accepted, with immediate effect? He left PDP for Labour Party to enable him contest for governorship of the Bayelsa State (President Jonathan’s native State). There were other persons; one was the Police Affairs Minister who though resigned in the same method (but) to contest the PDP governorship primary of his State.

As for Akunyili, she is positioning herself as the next governor after Peter Obi of Anambra State would have relinquished the position in 2014; if the appeal filed by Dr. Chris Ngige would allow. Her present manoeuvre has properly confirmed the rumour that she helped Governor Obi secure the governorship win over her PDP’s flag-bearer and brother-in-law, Professor Soludo, during the Anambra 2010 gubernatorial contest. It then means that not only Governor Akpabio and Chief Etiebet should stand accused of anti-party (PDP) activity as it related to those that drummed up support for Obi during the Anambra 2010 gubernatorial election.

Chief Fredrick Efosa, Ikpoba Slope, Benin City, Edo State.
