Dear Editor,

THE THIEVES AND LAWBREAKERS CALLED LAWMAKERS

No negative word would be inappropriate to describe the set of lawmakers we have in our present democratic setting. They have graduated from bad to worse, unchecked. The revelation of the CBN governor, Mallam Lamido Sanusi Lamido, is more than whistleblower. He did bail cheek-in-tongue Nigerians; he was able to look straight at the faces of the lawmakers and told the home truth. I read a letter by the Lady of Songs, Christy Essien Igbokwe, urging Sanusi not to apologize to anyone and this is the feeling of most Nigerians.

One wondered why our fearless media columnists waited with their investigative journalistic stances while Sanusi gave the lead. Sam Nda-Isaiah of the Leadership was at his best with the piece titled ‘Obama Would Rather Be a Nigerian Senator’ rendered on the back page of the newspaper of Monday, 13/12/10. He called those lawmakers (or lawbreakers) all the unprintable names they deserved; he even went on to query one of his Senator-friend how he got the money (he) used in building his three new houses in Abuja, married a third wife, acquired many state-of-the-art cars. The query was in response to when the Senator defended self by saying that he shares his own ‘loot’ with his constituent populace. Like Sam ended in his piece as a kind of counsel to his friend – “let them all (national assembly members) keep some change as they savour their loot because, one day, somebody will ask them to regurgitate all the ill-gotten payoffs; and there will be no mercy”. Deputy Senate President Ekweremadu had the effrontery to say that Federal Government could not afford N18, 000 minimum wage whereas his upkeep costs Nigerian whopping N290million annually? Selfish bunches you may say.

To crown all this, in Daily Trust of December 13/12/10, the former Chairman of the Revenue Mobilization, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), Engineer Hamman Tukur said that the so-called Constituency, Sitting, and Oversight Votes being ‘stolen’ by the lawmakers are illegal. If this is coming from a person that supposed to know, let the lawmakers start packing their loads and getting ready to refund their loots. They are no lawmakers but lawbreakers.
