Dear Editor

THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY INCIDENTS AS RITUALS?

This reminds one of Jonathan’s beliefs in native doctors. It should be recalled that the native doctor that earned N800million from former NNDC Chairman (Ambassador Sam Edem), Native Doctor Pereowei, once claimed that he was also the spiritual adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan right from his days as deputy governor of Bayelsa; this has not been denied.

Again during the town hall meeting when President Jonathan visited Akwa Ibom few months back, in trying to demonstrate how difficult it is to predict when Nigeria would have steady light, he was quoted as saying that "even if I am a native doctor, it would be difficult to predict".

Native doctoring relates to voodoo. First, for those of us that believe in native doctors, it is evident that Jonathan knew that the 1st October bomb blast would take place as revealed by the security and British intelligence reports at his disposal but as reported in Leadership newspaper of 2 October (page 6) he decided that the job should be left to his security chiefs.

Few days back and to mark the celebration of Nigeria’s jubilee anniversary, Dame Patience decided to distribute bags of rice to passersby in an unusual manner on the streets of Abuja. This claimed lives of not less than three innocent citizens. Up till this time of writing this short piece, there was nowhere in the media that she reportedly regretted the incident. As a mother, she knew the best system to use in distributing such largesse; therefore, she cannot claim ignorance.

Many country leaders of the world who believe in voodoo allow sacrifices to attain their desire; therefore, the onus is on the Jonathans to exonerate themselves from this fix. The earlier this is done, the better for them and the nation. It would help Nigerians drop any suspicion.

What happened to Nigerian citizens on 1st October, 2010 is a bad omen. It is regrettable that our (Jonathan) kinsmen’s organization, the MEND, has claimed responsibility for this heinous, unwarranted and unfortunate incident.
