SAN FRANCISCO, June 7, (THEWILL) – The Senate Thursday confirmed the elevation of Justice Adamu Abdu-Kafarati as the Chief Judge of Federal High Court.
His confirmation followed the presentation of the Report of the Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters by its Chairman, Senator David Umaru (Niger East).
The Committee of the Whole thereafter considered the report committee and confirmed him in accordance with the provision of Section 250(1) of the 1999 constitution (As Amended).
The Senate Thursday also reversed its earlier confirmation of a Resident Electoral Commissioner, Elder Monday Udo Tom, representing Akwa Ibom State.
THEWILL recalls that the appointee was on Wednesday confirmed alongside three other RECs after the presentation of the Senate Committee report on screening of REC nominees by the Chairman, Senator Suleiman Nasif (Bauchi North).
However, Senator Bassey Akpan Thursday raised a Point of Order to complain about his clearance citing a serious petition against the nominee from his state.
After listening to other senators from Akwa Ibom and those from other states who supported the withdrawal, Senate President Bukola Saraki approved it and directed the Committee on INEC to take another look at the petition and report back to the Senate.
