San Francisco, March 23, (THEWILL) – The upper chamber of the National Assembly on Thursday confirmed the nomination of 45 of the non-career ambassadorial nominees submitted by President Muhammadu Buhari, but declined to reject two of the nominees.

The decisions followed the report presented by Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, Monsurat Sunmonu (APC-Oyo), which had screened the 47 nominees.

Those rejected are 82-year-old Justice Sylvanus Nsofor (Imo State) and Jacob Daodu (Ondo State).

Presenting the report, Sunmonu explained that the octogenarian was rejected because he was not only frail but declined to recite the National Anthem when asked by the committee during his screening to do so.

She also pointed out that the Ondo State nominee was rejected because security report from the Department of State Services, DSS, described him as deceitful and corrupt.

Recall that Nsofor had during his screening, refused to recite the national anthem and questioned the Senators’ reason for asking him to do the recital.

Sunmonu disclosed that he pushed back a question on his suitability for the job of an envoy in view of his age.

She quoted the nominee as saying the Senate should ask Zimbabwe’s Robert Mugabe how he was leading his country despite his very advanced age.

In line with the recommendation of the committee, the Senate rejected the nominations of Nsofor, a retired judge, from Imo State; Daodu from Ondo State; but cleared and confirmed the other 45 nominees.
