BEVERLY HILLS, September 19, (THEWILL) – Less than 48 hours after gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram members launched a deadly attack on the Kano State College of Education, the insurgents Friday stormed a local market in Borno State, killing several traders.

A military source who confirmed the attack told THEWILL that the gunmen who were apparently on rampage to replenish their food supply stormed the Mainok market, about 56 kilometres from Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, Friday afternoon, shooting sporadically as they raided the market, carting away foodstuff and money belonging to the traders.

Narrating the experience, a Maiduguri resident, John Ibe, who was travelling along the Maiduguri-Damaturu road at about 1.30pm, also confirmed the attack by the insurgents on the market .

“I boarded a luxury bus from Lagos and when we got to Mainok at exactly 1.30pm, we heard heavy gunshots from the western part of the market and sporadic gunshots followed. Hundreds of traders and residents fled the market in confusion, running to cross the highway to the other side while vehicles passing through the town were also making attempts to flee the town. It was such a confusion,” he disclosed.

According to him, many fleeing traders were knocked down and killed by fleeing motorists amid the confusion .

“Many people may have been killed judging from the way the insurgents were shooting at the crowd,” he said, stressing that many of the fleeing residents who were hit by vehicles speeding off from the area, were seen falling and bleeding.
“Vehicles were hitting one another and the Boko Haram kept shooting,” he added.

Another security source, craving anonymity, said he also passed through the road during the incident . According to him, the gunmen first fired Rapid Propelled Grenade (RPG) into the middle of the market and thereafter started shooting sporadically in the market. “The death toll may be high because there were many people in the market,” he said.
