SAN FRANCISCO, February 05, (THEWILL) – Following the decision of the Supreme Court to rule in favour of the continued trial of Senate President Bukola Saraki at the Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT, the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Kwara State has claimed that the ordeal of its leader, Saraki, is politically-motivated.

A seven-man panel of the apex court presided over by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Mahmud Mohammed, unanimously ruled on Friday that Saraki’s appeal against the jurisdiction of the trial and competence of his assets falsification charges, lacked merit.

Justice Walter Onnoghen, who read the lead judgment, held that contrary to Saraki’s contention, the Danladi Umar-led CCT was validly constituted by two members adding that the tribunal was by the provisions of its enabling laws and the Constitution conferred with the quasi-criminal jurisdiction and thus could validly issue bench warrant.

But reacting in a statement issued on Friday by its Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Sulyman Buhari, Kwara APC described the apex court’s ruling as disappointing, surprising and shocking, but urged members and supporters to remain calm.

The terse statement reads, “The ordeal of the Senate President is not an anti-corruption driven case but a politically-motivated prosecution aimed at undermining the person and the office of the Senate President.

“Kwara APC acknowledges and appreciates the resilience, loyalty and support shown thus far by our teeming members and supporters.

“The party urges its members to embrace calmness, peace and tranquillity ‎as the innocence of the Senate President will be proven in due course and justice will prevail over political shenanigans.”
