NEMA: 11 Pregnant Women Delivered At IDPs Camps In Biu

SAN FRANCISCO, July 24, (THEWILL) – Eleven pregnant women have been delivered of babies at the two National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) camps established for internally displaced persons in Biu following last week’s loss of Damboa town to Boko Haram.

Disclosing this Thursday in a statement issued by its Northeast Zonal Information Officer, Mallam AbdulKadir Ibrahim, NEMA said about 10, 000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) have been registered at the two camps established in Biu , which is about 100 kilometres from Damboa.
NEMA said two truckloads of relief materials have also been sent to Biu to take care of the IDPs.

The statement disclosed that 10 of the women who delivered had normal deliveries at the camps while a woman had to be taken to the Biu General Hospital where she was delivered after a Caesarean Session (CS).

NEMA said the newly delivered mothers were, apart from the normal relief materials, also given some toys, feeding bottles and baby food to enable them take good care of their newly delivered babies.

According to the statement, the staff of the Northeast zonal office of NEMA have been working in conjunction with other stakeholders such as the Nigerian Civil Defence Corps and the Red Cross to offer relief to those in the two camps located at the Government Girls Secondary School and Central Primary School, both in Biu.

The statement disclosed that the North East Zonal Coordinator of NEMA , Alhaji Muhammed Kanar, led the team of officials from the NEMA office in Maiduguri for the exercise.

They were said to have arrived Biu on Tuesday and may be leaving for Maiduguri on Friday to plan further strategies for other numerous campsites for IDPs in the zone.

NEMA already has IDPs from Damboa in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital as well as in Goniri in Yobe State. According to Ibrahim, the camps are daily populated and apart from about 10,000 already at the Biu camps, two buses brought in IDPs from Damboa and the numbers have continued to grow by the day.

Local sources said the NEMA team was also at the Emir of Biu’s palace to pay homage on the monarch, Mai Umar Mustapha Aliyu, and thank him for his support to the IDPs so far.
