SAN FRANCISCO, November 24, (THEWILL) – Lagos-based human rights lawyer, Festus Keyamo, has petitioned the Inspector General of Police, Suleiman Abba, over alleged intimidation, oppression of one Mrs. Stephanie Chioma Okeke by her in-laws weeks after the death of her husband in suspicious circumstances.

The petition entitled; “a widow’s desperate cry for help: Petition against the in-law of Mrs. Stephanie Chioma Okeke in respect of the suspicious death of her husband and the evil scheme to secretly bury him without her participation and thereafter collect all his properties” was deposed to by Uchenna B. Moneke, ESQ and Teena Wills-Obong (Mrs), Counsel Practice Manager for Keyamo’s chambers.

The petitioners are asking the police to launch a full-scale investigation into the cause of the death of the widow’s husband as well as provide her with full police protection to bury her husband.

Giving a graphic details of the incident that led to the petition, the petitioners said Mrs. Stephanie Chioma Okeke, who is the statutory wife of the late Chief Chukwudi Emmanuel Okeke had briefed them over the death of the deceased who died under suspicious circumstances on October 8, 2014 after attending his niece’s wedding ceremony in Awka, Anambra State.

The petitioners said the deceased was hale and hearty when he left his family in Lagos to attend the wedding, adding that he had health complications soon after the wedding ceremony but unfortunately he never survived it.

The petitioners said; “Our client’s husband was literally abandoned by the following individuals (Messrs Emmanuel Nwachukwu, Obiora Okeke, Amaechi Onyechi, Chukwudi Okasia, and Mrs. Cordilia Onyechi) to die in the hospital while they were busy devising plans and hatching schemes on how to steal and convert her husband’s estate for themselves.”

According to the petitioners, the deceased’s wife was thereafter locked up by the afore-mentioned people at State C.I.D Enugu under very inhuman and brutal conditions, adding that the suspected culprits have been threatening to eliminate her if she fails to steer clear of her late husband’s properties.

“Some of them were even bold enough to tell her that what happened to her late husband might happen to her. The meaning of this is that they may eliminate her at anytime in order to fully inherit all that she has with her late husband, who is yet to be buried.,” they stated.

The petitioners also said that information made available by the victim suggests that the suspected family members of the deceased are planning to secretly bury her husband and have equally mapped out plans to arrest his wife and if possible eliminate her to actualise their grand design.

“If they succeed in so doing, our client will live with trauma (if at all she survives it) for the rest of her life.”

“It is very clear and obvious to our client that plans to eliminate and stop her from attending her husband’s burial are so real and that these people are capable of actualising their evil plans,” they also stated.

The petitioners are therefore asking the Police IG to launch a full-scale investigation into the cause of the death of the widow’s husband as well as provide her with full police protection to bury her husband.
