BEVERLY HILLS, September 01, (THEWILL) – Kenya’s Supreme Court on Friday annulled the result of the country’s recent presidential election, citing alleged irregularities.

It ruled that “the presidential election held on August 8 was not conducted in accordance with the constitution”.

Ruling in favour of the opposition which challenged the declaration of President Uhuru Kenyatta as the winner, Chief Justice David Maraga, declared the election “invalid, null and void” and ordered that a new poll be re-run within 60 days.

Maraga said this was a majority decision, with two judges in the panel said to have disagreed with the ruling.

Incumbent President Kenyatta had been declared winner of the election which opposition said was marred with irregularities.

The court, however, said there was no evidence of misconduct on the part of Kenyatta who garnered 54.3 per cent of the votes to defeat his rival, Raila Odinga,
who polled 44.7 per cent.

Odinga had claimed the country’s election commission’s ICT system had been hacked to manipulate the results of the election.
