SAN FRANCISCO, July 25, (THEWILL) – The Federal Government has cancelled its plan to build a film village in Kano after opposition from Muslim clerics.
The over $10m project would have created thousands of job opportunities and promote cultural activities with a state-of-the-art facilities for the Hausa language film industry, known as Kannywood.
However, Muslims clerics opposed the idea saying the project would promote immorality and would encourage teenage girls to run away from home in the hope of becoming actresses.
Locals also kicked against the project insisting that the project is not a priority but preferred the revival of dams for agricultural development in the area.
An aide to President Muhammadu Buhari, Abdurrahaman Kawu Sumaila, who announced the cancellation said the president listened to the people’s concerns.
