SAN FRANCISCO, May 27, (THEWILL) – With just two days to the end of his tenure, President Goodluck Jonathan has sent the 2014 National Conference Report to the National Assembly for consideration and passage.
In a letter Wednesday to the Senate and House of Representatives captioned “Approval for the implementation of the recommendations and resolutions of the National Conference 2014,” which was read at Wednesday’s plenary, the President said the conference report, which was submitted to him in August 2014 by Chairman of the Conference, retired Justice Idris Kutigi, had been considered and approved by the Federal Executive Council on March 18, 2015.
The President urged the Senate and House of Representatives to consider and give the recommendations legislative backing whilst adding that the conference made far-reaching recommendations on many areas, including political restructuring and forms of government; political parties and electoral matters; public finance; national securities; land tenure matters and national boundaries; energy; human rights and legal reforms; and devolution of power.
“The recommendations of the conference on the implementation modalities of the resolutions are contained in Chapter Six of the report.
“The resolutions are classified into three broad categories, constitutional, legal and policy issues.
“The report further indicates the nature of the actions to be taken, the objectives to be achieved and the agencies that need to take the actions.
“The conference also submitted draft bills of resolutions that require constitutional amendments or legal enactments,” the President wrote.
The tenure of the current 7th National Assembly ends on June 5, 2015.
It is however not clear why the President delayed sending the report to the National Assembly.
