BEVERLY HILLS, January 07, (THEWILL) – The level of insecurity in Delta State has reached alarming proportions as kidnappers are on rampage in the oil rich state giving residents sleepless night and seizing their victims at random for ransom demands.

Despite the state government effort at checking insecurity with the number of security aides and huge budget to help security agencies tackle insecurity, THEWILL check revealed that in the last few months there have been several cases of high profile kidnapping and killing by suspected armed bandits.

Delta state government recently inaugurated a 69-man Delta State Waterways and Land Security Committee. The committee is saddled with the responsibility of enhancing peace and security through information and intelligence gathering as well as maintaining a close relationship with the various security heads in the state.

The committee, which has the calibre of Prof. Saliba Mukoro, a one-time governorship candidate, Isaac Onyeson and Arthur Akpowowo as well as Mr. Boro Opoudo as its Chairman, is expected to help security agency tackle insecurity-kidnapping and armed robbery in particular in the state.

However, Check revealed that since the inauguration of the committee, no visible work leading to arrest of either kidnappers or armed robbers who have been terrorising the state in the last few months have been carried out.

Of recent is the abduction of the Obi of Ubulu-Uku kingdom, Aniocha South Local Government Area of State, HRM Akaeze Edward, Ofulue III, who was seized by suspected gunmen who were said to have waylaid him a spot between Igbodo and Obior which has become a flashpoint for crime in recent time.

Alarmingly, this was the same route where two catholic priests returning from a ceremony in the neighbourhood were reportedly kidnapped about three weeks ago.

The whereabouts of the monarch remains unknown.

While the security operatives are battling to rescue the victim, the kidnapping of the wife of a Super Eagles’ midfielder, Fengor Ogude in Warri on Monday also stare them on the face.

Ogude’s wife, Maimunat was abducted after an outing with her kids. The kids who were reportedly thrown out of her car have been traumatised over the sad incident which the police are yet to unravel.

THEWILL investigations reveal that the state of insecurity had forced the State chapter of Medical and Dental Consultant Association of Nigeria, MDCAN, and the Association of Resident Doctors, ARD to stormed the Government House to formally register their protest over the alarming state to which their colleagues are seized by ransom demanding gunmen.

In the last count, over 10 persons have been kidnapped at the Delta State University Teaching Hospital, DELSUTH, Oghara in Ethiope West Local Government Areas of the state.

Dr. Obiabo Yahaya, a Neurologist, was abducted on 29th December, 2015 just few days after the Christmas celebration, which heightened fear among residents doctors who are now endangered species in the hands of kidnappers in that part of the state.

“The kidnappers collect their ransom and move to the next victim certain that they would not be caught and that ransom demanded must be paid’’, Vice Chairman of the Association, Dr. Ejiroghene Umuerri said in a protest letter.

ARD in a protest letter signed by its President, Dr Innocent Okoacha and Secretary, Dr Moses Ekpekpe, lamented that the “kidnap of doctors is now a recurrent problem in Ethiope West and Sapele Local Government Areas”.

Meanwhile, the police is still trying to unravel the circumstances rounding the abduction of Mrs Queen Eyetan Egbedi, mother of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa’s Senior Special Assistant on Agriculture and immediate past Chairman of Sapele Local Government Council, Mr Julius Egbedi.

Mrs Egbedi who was kidnapped on December 27th, 2015 has not been released by her captors who are said to be demanding a ransom of N35million for her release. It would be recalled that one of the victim’s sons, Mr Michael Egbedi, had been kidnapped a month earlier for two days but was released without ransom when the kidnappers sensed that soldiers were closing on them.

All effort to get comments from state Police Public Relations Officer, Celestina Kalu prove abortive as she didn’t reply to text message sent to her on the subject matter.
