BEVERLY HILLS, November 12, (THEWILL) – The Second Republic Vice-President, Alex Ekwueme, was on Sunday airlifted abroad for further medical treatment.

Mr. Ekwueme was hospitalised at Memfys Hospital of Neurosurgery, Enugu, for chest infection on October 29.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the elder statesman departed the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, around 8:30 a.m. on Sunday in a white air ambulance with registration number N605AJ.

However, Memfys Hospital ‎and family sources did not disclose the country where the former vice president would be receiving treatment.

NAN reports that some family members accompanied Mr. Ekwueme on the medical trip, while others came to bid him farewell.

President Muhammadu Buhari had last week approved that Mr. Ekwueme be flown abroad for treatment.

As a general rule, Nigerians, including the President should NOT be allowed to go abroad for medical treatment. There should be no exceptions since Nigeria has doctors that are qualified in every field of medical endeavour. It is obvious that the rich and the powerful are using the money that they stole from public coffers to ensure that the can obtain the best medical treatment abroad while local health care has been completely destroyed for the average Nigerian. Preventing all Nigerians from going abroad for medical treatment might inspire the government to do its job and provide the best quality and world class health care locally for all Nigerians. The motto should be we heal together or we die together. The corrupt rich both public and private should stop cheating the average Nigerian.
