SAN FRANCISCO, April 18, (THEWILL) – The alleged cult war waging in Ughelli, Delta state have purportedly claimed the life of the Ughelli branch chairman of the Nigeria Bar Association, (NBA), Barr Austin Icheghe.

So far about seven persons have been killed since the clash between members of Black Axe confraternity and Vikings broke out within the metropolis, THEWILL was told.

A source alleged that the lawyer, who is survived with four children might be a suspected member of the Black Axe and his death might be connected to the Thursday cult clash that involved the Black Axe and Vikings.

Icheghe who was trailed by the suspected gunmen was killed on Thursday, about 9pm while alighting from his car.

The deceased’s niece simply identified as Egunor Uviesa who confirmed the development said her uncle was shot in front of his apartment while alighting from his vehicle after close of work.

She said that the deceased was shot on the head with the bullet damaging part of his face after which he was immediately rushed to a private clinic but was later confirmed dead.

Meanwhile, the Executive Director, Center for the Vulnerable and the Underprivileged, (CENTREP), Oghenejabor Ikimi, has condemned the gruesome murder in its entirety saying; “It is barbaric.

“I wondered why anyone would want to sentence a lawyer to death. The killing of the NBA chairman brings to mind the incessant killings in Ughelli which is on the increase in recent times. We are tired of cases of unresolved murders and assassinations nationwide.

He recalled that a year ago, two lawyers in the state were murdered by unknown gunmen on their way to court and the police are yet to arrest the culprits till date.

“We are calling on the State Commission of Police and his men to wake up and checkmate these killings because we are tired of these killings”.

In the same vein, an Asaba based lawyer, Mr. Chuks Ebu, who said the deceased was his junior back in their university days, described him as a down to earth human who cannot even hurt a fly and wondered why he should be murdered in such circumstances.

Ebu however called on the police to as a matter of urgency to unraveled the circumstances that led to the gruesome murdered and arrest and prosecution those behind the killings.

Since the renewed cult clashes started on Sunday, there have been heavy security presence in the metropolis, with police mounting roadblocks in strategic locations in and around Ughelli town as well as arresting at random persons believed to be innocent.

State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Celestina Kalu could not respond to calls and text messages put to her mobile line but police sources at the state police command in Asaba confirmed the incident.
