SAN FRANCISCO, February 12, (THEWILL) – Officers of the Nigeria Police Force have taken over the premises of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) after being informed of a planned protest by workers of the agency.
THEWILL recalls that workers at the NHIS, last week, protested against the recall of the Executive Secretary of the NHIS, Prof. Usman Yusuf by President Muhammadu Buhari. Yusuf was suspended for his involvement with the embezzlement of N91million.
Although, a panel set up by the Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole had suspended Yusuf while he is being investigated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
However, the Presidency, in a letter to Adewole, signed by the Chief of staff to the President, Abba Kyari, simply informed the Minister of Yusuf’s reinstatement but made no reference to the allegations.
Irked by the development, the workers began a protest when Yusuf resumed at the office on Thursday.
According to Aledeh.com, it was revealed that “workers have been told since Friday not to enter their offices in preparation for a protest this morning.”
“Oga(NHIS boss) has brought in police this morning because he heard of our planned protest,” a source was quoted.
