SAN FRANCISCO, November 24, (THEWILL) – The five-year-old Boko Haram insurgency in Borno State has adversely affected the completion of the Alli Monguno Teachers Village being constructed by the state Government.

The village is a 300-unit housing estate developed for teachers in the state and named after the first minister of petroleum, Dr. Shettima Ali Monguno.

The foundation stone of the project was laid by Vice President Namadi Sambo in February last year during his official visit to the state.

However, supplies of materials to the project site in Maiduguri were cut off because of the activities of the rampaging Boko Haram insurgents.

Project supervisor of the Teachers Village, Dauda Buratai, disclosed that progress on the project had been hampered by the Boko Haram insurgency.

He made the disclosure Monday while conducting the governor, Kashim Shettima, round the project, saying the project could have long been completed but for the inability to get laterite which is mostly sourced from an area affected by insurgency activities into Maiduguri.

Buratai noted that unlike the other houses constructed by the Shettima administration which are nearing completion as they are built with normal bricks, the Teachers Village is being constructed with special bricks as requested by Vice President Sambo during the project’s foundation laying ceremony.

This, according to him, was to allow for creation of more job opportunities and training of youths in bricks making and assembling in line with Governor Shettima’s vision.

He however disclosed that despite the challenges, 131 units of two bedroom flats have been fully completed and ready for commissioning while 108 were almost completed.

Buratai suggested the use of sand crease as an alternative so as to speed up the completion of the project, saying the building would still be of high standard.

While calling for the speedy completion of the project, Shettima , who also assessed work at the Phase One of the Legacy Gardens , cautioned contractors against using substandard materials. He said his administration was committed to delivering 2,500 houses and apartments under construction in different locations in Maiduguri alone.
