SAN FRANCISCO, June 26, (THEWILL) – Suicide bombers suspected to be members of the Boko Haram sect on Sunday night detonated explosives at different locations in the University of Maiduguri, UNIMAID, campus including the security office where two persons were said to have been killed by the blast.

The Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, in Borno state, Victor Isukwu, had at about 12 midnight, confirmed the incident on a WhatsApp platform managed by his office, but only gave sketchy details of casualties recorded.

“At Unimaid only one male suicide bomber died; three university security personnel injured among which one later died,” he wrote on the social media platform.

However, a professor in the Mass Communication department of the university, Danjuma Gambo, who doubles as the spokesman of the institution, confirmed in a BBC Hausa broadcast early on Monday that three suicide attacks took place in the university last night.

Report has it that residents of Maiduguri, the Borno capital, who celebrated a hitch-free Sallah could not go to sleep on Sunday night as sounds of bombings and shootings rented most part of the night and early hours of the dawn.

The city vibrated with the first blast, which occurred at about 10:15 p.m. Immediately after it was confirmed that it was from the university’s campus, another explosion occurred at exactly 11 pm.

Earlier in the day, the Borno state governor, Kashim Shettima noted that the recent spate of attacks in different parts of the state was worrisome, and called on the military to strive hard and contain the recent wave of attacks by the Boko Haram insurgents.

Speaking at this year’s Eid el Fitr reception for members of the State Executive Council and other dignitaries at the Government House in Maiduguri, he called for efforts to be intensified to end the Boko Haram insurgency that have been ravaging the North-East.

Noting that the military had recorded tremendous successes against Boko Haram terrorists, the governor said, “We have to commend President Muhammadu Buhari and the military for their efforts in fighting the Boko Haram insurgents.

“But in the last two weeks, we have had tremendous security challenges in Damboa, in Chibok, in Maiduguri and in all nooks and crannies of the state.

“We were literary attacked by the insurgents from different angles.

“Yes, we had recorded lots of successes before.

“We witnessed lots of setbacks in a short while. All hands must be on deck for us to have lasting peace in this part of the world.”
