BEVERLY HILLS, July 29, (THEWILL) – For the first time since the Boko Haram insurgency started five years ago, rampaging Boko Haram insurgents Monday night struck in Katarko village, on the outskirts of Damaturu, the Yobe State capital, killing eight persons and bombing an important bridge linking the state with Borno and Adamawa State.

Katarko, a community in Gujba Local Government Area of the state, is believed to be one of the strongholds of the insurgents in Yobe and the village is located at some 22 kilometres south of Damaturu .
Local sources told THEWILL that the rampaging gunmen, who operated unhindered for about seven hours, arrived the town around 7:30pm, striking the military base in the town first before moving to wreak more havocs on some houses where eight persons were killed.

“They came here and launched an unsuccessful attack on the military base before embarking on some selective killings within town leaving us with eight casualties presently being prepared for burial,” a local source told THEWILL on Tuesday.

He disclosed that the gunmen struck at the town around 7:30 pm and operated unhindered till 2:30 am.
They were also said to have blown up the Katarko Bridge linking Damaturu to their stronghold; Buni Yadi, the capital of Gujba Local Government Area, which connects Yobe with the neighbouring Borno and Adamawa States.
Meanwhile, two suspected Boko Haram members have been arrested with Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) in Damaturu. They were said to have been arrested at separate locations within the state capital.

Although no official comment on the arrest was forthcoming when filing this report, local sources said the first suspect arrested gave out information leading to the arrest of his accomplice in another part of the metropolis.
