SAN FRANCISCO, September 19, (THEWILL) – The Federal Government Friday started distributing relief materials to victims of the Boko Haram insurgency in Borno State scattered in various relief camps in Maiduguri, the state capital.

The commencement of the exercise came as the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) which is coordinating the exercise asked the Borno State Resettlement and Distribution Committees (BORDC), established by Borno Government, to release the over 52 truckloads of relief materials to 58, 000 displaced persons in the various camps .

Director General of NEMA, Alhaji Mohammed Sani, gave the charge at the commencement of the exercise at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp, Maiduguri.

Representing President Goodluck Jonathan at the event was the Minister of State for Power, Hon. Mohammed Wakil, who warned against the diversion of the relief materials.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Minister noted that the responsibilities of the State’s resettlement committees’ members was to distribute the items “equitably and efficiently.”

The items included food stuff, building materials, mattresses, mats and other basic needs for the over 58, 000 IDPs in the five or six camps.

According to Wakil, “As the Federal Government has complimented its efforts of delivering relief materials with the flagging off of their distribution to various camps, I charge the resettlement and distribution committees, headed by Usman Jidda Shuwa to ensure that each and every affected person by the Boko Haram insurgency, was adequately resettled with basic needs of life and safety, before they return to their respective towns and communities.”

He warned that on no account should the materials get into the wrongs hands in order not to defeat the Federal Government’s objective of reducing the devastating effects of insurgency in the state.

Assuring the Minister, NEMA Director General, Sidi, said, “The over 52 truckloads of loads of relief materials, will be distributed by the State’s committees and supervised by this agency, NEMA, including journalists resident in Borno State.”

While commending the Borno State Government for complementing Federal Government’s efforts in resettling the IDPs in Maiduguri ,he said to ensure accountability in the distribution exercise, the displaced persons must be registered by the various committees for documentation, accountability and transparency.

In his response, Jidda said: “This is the third time the NEMA boss, was in Maiduguri for these displaced persons in the camps. We therefore appreciate Federal Government’s intervention… On our part, the state government has approved N100 million with the release of N35 million for the upkeep of these victims of the insurgency, with a population of over 4, 000 in the NYSC camp here.”
