SAN FRANCISCO, August 26, (THEWILL) – Bayern Munich was literally on fire in Friday’s opening match of the new German league season as it trashed Werder Bremen 6-0.
Lewandowski, the Bundesliga’s top-scorer last season with 30 goals, finished the game with a hole in his goal-scoring right boot with three goals as Bayern ran riot.
Xabi Alonso scored the first goal of the 2016/17 campaign at Munich’s Allianz Arena just nine minutes into the game and Lewandowski followed with the second four minutes later as it finished 2-0 at the break.
Lewandowski returned with the third goal of the match from a curling cross from Thomas Muller just 39 seconds into the second-half before Bayern’s captain, Philipp Lahm added a fourth.
Franck Ribery fired home the firth goal while Lewandowski converted a penalty, from a foul on Rafinha in the area, on 77 minutes to claim his third, and first hat-trick of the season, and Munich’s sixth goal.
Bayern won last season’s German league title by 10 points, making history with a fourth straight Bundesliga title.
They picked up under new coach Carlo Ancelotti where they left off under Pep Guardiola, who left in May to coach Manchester City, with long periods of possession.
