ABUJA, August 17, (THEWILL) -The establishment of the FCT Board of Internal Revenue is a must to fast track the provision of basic infrastructure in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. FCT Minister, Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed stated this today while receiving members of the Abuja District of the Chartered Institute of Taxation that paid him a courtesy visit in his office. The Minister restated that the Revenue Board when operational woud re-position the FCT Administration and make it economically independent to provide the required services without going cap in hand to the Federal Government for everything. Senator Mohammed said that the FCT Administration is presently thinking of engaging credible revenue consultants that will be able to create revenue basket. The Minister lamented that with the huge number of plots of land allocated since the creation of the Federal Capital Territory only insignificant proportion had been developed because of lack of financial muscle to provide the basic infrastructure which he attributed to the non-existence of the Revenue Board. Senator Mohammed remarked that the establishment of the Board could increase the revenue projection in the 2010 budget by 10 fold. He expressed the commitment of his administration to develop the required institutional framework needed for its take off and solicited for the support of Nigerians especially those residents in the Federal Capital Territory. Senator Mohammed charged the Chartered Institute of Taxation to partner with the FCT Administration using their expertise to re-discover untapped areas as well as the areas of leakages. Speaking earlier, the leader of the delegation of the Chartered Institute of Taxation, Mrs. Hope Uhegbu assured the Minister of the willingness of the Institute to partner with the FCT Administration to generate more revenue for its sustenance. She promised that the Institute will also assist in the training of FCT Staff on tax matters and also help screen consultants that may be recruited to provide services for the Territory.
