ABUJA April 29, (THEWILL) - The House of Representatives Committee on Customs has advocated for the release of a N100 billion naira grant for the Nigerian Customs Service to enable it perform its functions effectively.

The Committee led by The Honourable Yakubu Dogara which presented its report on the floor of the House yesterday also recommended the reduction of collections for Free On Board (FOB) from the existing 7 percent to 5 percent.

The panel also recommended that the Destination Inspection Act, 2003 be repealed to allow Customs perform inspection related duties presently handled by the Ministry of Finance and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

The report noted that the grant would enable the Customs Service complete all its abandoned projects across the nation and boost the condition of service on its personnel.

The grant it said will also be used to procure modern combat tools including sea-going vessels, and aircrafts, which are non-existent at the moment but absolutely necessary for its operations.

It also called on the federal government to forward to the National Assembly a Bill to repeal and re-enact the Customs and Exercise Management Act, 2004 to further streamline its activities and ensure best practices in the system.
