San Francisco March 31, (THEWILL) – Nigeria’s aviation authority has started installing body scanners at major international airports, meeting one of the conditions set by the US government if it wants to be delisted from its ‘terror watch list.’

The scanners are capable of detecting hidden objects in and around the body and are expected to help improve security at Nigerian airports.

The 3G scanners are being installed at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport while Abuja, Kano and Port Harcourt International Airports would follow suit, according to a senior official at the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN.

It is expected that as soon as the consultants handling the installations complete their work, training for handlers would begin, before the machines are deployed to screen passengers on international flights.

The Christmas Day bombing attempt of a US bound plane from Amsterdam by Nigerian born Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab prompted the United States government to include Nigeria on its terror watch list.
