San Francisco March 07, (THEWILL) - More than 300 people were killed in clashes on Sunday between Islamic Fulani herdsmen and Christian villagers in Dogo Nahawa, Jos South Local Government Area, but the Plateau State Christian Elders Consultative Forum said over 500 Christians were slaughtered during the incident.

The herdsmen from the surrounding hills attacked at about 3 a.m. until about 6 a.m. (WAT) shooting into the air before beheading those who came out of their homes with machetes. Most of those killed were children and women.

It was not immediately clear what triggered the violence.

"They came around 3 o'clock in the morning and they started shooting into the air."

"The shooting was just meant to bring people from their houses and then when people came out they started cutting them with machetes," a Dogo Nahawa resident Peter Jang told Reuters.

Surprisingly, no security agency came to rescue the victims even though a 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew was imposed on residents by the state government after the January sectarian violence, which left many dead.
