San Francisco (THEWILL) - A Swiss court on Friday, convicted Abba Abacha, son of Nigeria’s late military dictator, Gen Sani Abacha of graft and "being a member of a criminal organization."

The trial judge, Yves Aeschlimann ordered the seizure of $350 million dollars in assets from the young Abba and gave him a custodial suspended sentence.

The Swiss authorities started investigating the Abacha family in 2009 at the request of the Obasanjo government. They have returned about $700 million dollars stolen from the Nigerian treasury to the government.

The late General is believed to have stolen more than $2 billion dollars.

In 2005, the Swiss authorities sought the assistance of the German government in the arrest of Abba Abacha, who was hiding in Germany at that time. After his arrest, he was extradited to Switzerland to face criminal charges.

The Luxembourg and Bahamas governments also assisted in tracing the stolen funds.

We gather Abba Abacha may appeal the ruling.
