San Francisco (THEWILL) - Nigeria’s former first lady, Maryam Babangida, 61, is alive and responding to treatment at a Los Angeles cancer facility contrary to speculations that she has passed.

Mrs. Babangida flew into Los Angeles about two weeks ago with her family from Switzerland to seek treatment for a cancer she has battled for more than a decade.

Though the former first lady’s cancer has reached an advanced stage, sources close to the family say she is in “high spirits and praying for her miracle.”

Her husband, former Head of State, General Ibrahim Babangida had earlier issued a statement debunking rumours of her death. He said the rumours were, “ untrue, cruel, malicious and calculated to cause mischief.”

The retired General and their other three children are still in Los Angeles as at the time of writing this report, while Mohammed, their eldest son has since returned to Nigeria. He was spotted playing Polo in Kaduna earlier today (monday).

Our thoughts and prayers continue to go to the Babangida family.
