Los Angeles (THEWILL) – The Greek police department Thursday, announced it bursted a cartel that forced Nigerian women into prostitution using ‘Juju;’ (voodoo) in new cases reported in Europe.

Reports say the cartel is believed to have exploited over 40 Nigerian women smuggled into Greece from Turkey and other EU countries in the last two years.

A 20-year old Nigerian/Greek national was arrested on suspicion of ties to the cartel and police are seeking to question her husband, a Greek citizen.

Five Nigerian women were rescued from the cartel after they were held for failure to get their families remit about $120,000 US dollars.

Just last month, Netherland prosecutors pushed for tough prison terms for ten Nigerians accused of using ‘Juju’ to force over 130 Nigerian girls into prostitution within the EU states.

The girls were reportedly brought into Netherland between 2007 and 2008 as asylum seekers, but disappeared from their camp.

About half of the girls whose age ranged from 15-25 were traced and rescued, but the rest are believed to be in Italy, Spain and France.

The suspects were arrested with the collaboration of many EU country police, Nigerian and the US law enforcement agencies.

Poverty and poor leadership in Africa’s most populous country has forced some young Nigerian girls into prostitution both home and abroad.

Nigeria is the 8th largest producer of crude but majority of its citizens wallow in poverty and hunger.
