Los Angeles (THEWILL) - Notorious Washington DC sniper John Allen Mohammad, 48, was executed tuesday, by lethal injection with twelve persons present as witnesses according to Virginia prisons authorities.

Mohammed and his partner, Lee Boyd Malvo, then 17, were responsible for the death of ten people in the Washington DC area during a three-week shooting spree in October 2002.

Malvo could not be given the death sentence because of his age at the time of the crime.

Virginia Governor, Tim Kaine denied mohammad's application for clemency early tuesday after the supreme court said it would not touch the case.

The governor in a statement said, "Having carefully reviewed the petition for clemency and judicial opinions regarding this case, I find no compelling reason to set aside the sentence that was recommended by the jury and then imposed and affirmed by the courts."

Mohammad had two ex wives and four children.

He was pronounced dead at 9.11 pm eastern time.
