2012 Armed Forces Remembrance Week Rounded Off In Calabar

CALABAR, January 15, (THEWILL) - Activities marking the 2012 Armed Forces Remembrance Week have been rounded off with the laying of wreaths at the grave of the Unknown Soldier at the Cenotaph, Millennium Park, Calabar, Cross River State.

Wreaths were laid by Governor Liyel Imoke represented by the Deputy Governor, Mr. Efiok Cobham, Speaker of the State House of Assembly Hon Larry Odey and Chief Judge of the state, His Lordship, Hon. Justice Dorathy Eyamba -Idem.

Others include Commander 13 Brigade, Nigerian Army, Brig Gen Shehu Yusu, Commander NNS Victory, Navy Commodore Kingsley Itoko, Commander 207 Special Mobility Group Nigerian Air Force, Air Commodore O. A. Ogunjobi, Commissioner of Police, Mr. Sampson Wuda, State Chairman, Nigerian Legion, Lt Col Timothy Ushie (Rtd), Chairman State Council of Chiefs and Paramount Ruler of Bakassi Local Government Area, HRH Etiyin Etim Okon Edet and Counsel General Equatorial Guinea, Antonio Posua Ngui-Egua.
   
The governor had earlier inspected a guard of honour mounted by 96 officers and men of the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Navy and the Nigerian Air Force while short prayers were offered by chaplains from the Catholic Church, Moslem denomination and the Protestant Church, a two-minute silence was also observed.
   
A 21 gun salute was fired in honour of the gallantry of the fallen heroes that fought in peace support operations during the First and Second Wars, Indo-Pakistani war (1965-66), Congo (1960-63), Somalia (1991-93), Angola (1991-93), Kuwait (1991-97), Liberia, Chad (1981-91), Sudan, Bosnia and Uganda (1993-97) and the Nigerian Civil War (1967-70) and was supported with a Reveille.
   
The weeklong activities started with the launching of the Armed Forces Remembrance emblem, Church and Jumat services at the Immaculate Conception Church, Calabar and Calabar Central Mosque respectively.
