Benue University Honours UBA’s Tony Elumelu, Mark, Katsina-Alu

San Francisco, April 20, (THEWILL) – The Governing Council of the Benue State University, Nigeria will on Saturday, April 24, 2010, confer an honourary Doctor of Science Degree (Honoris Causa) on the Group Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of UBA Group Plc, Mr. Tony Elumelu; Senate President, Mr. David Mark; and Chief Justice of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Justice Katsina Alu.

THEWILL gathered that the Degree is being conferred on Mr. Elumelu, following the recommendation of the Senate of the University as part of activities lined up for the institution’s combined 6th – 10th convocation ceremony holding from April 22 to April 24, 2010 in Markudi, the Benue State capital. 

According to a document obtained by THEWILL, "the honor is in recognition of Mr. Elumelu’s remarkable achievements in the African banking space, outstanding philanthropy as well as contributions to nation building and humanity in general." 

Elumelu has accepted to personally receive the award and thanked the Senate and Governing Council of the University for the recognition accorded him. He pledged to continue to serve as a role model and mentor to young African entrepreneurs.

The retiring Managing Director will institutionalize the "Tony Elumelu Prize" for the best graduating student in Economics in the University at the ceremony.

Mr. Elumelu is retiring from UBA having served as Managing Director for the mandatory 10 years going by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) new guideline on tenure limit for bank chief executives.
