FG Fines Owners Of Toxic Waste Laden Vessel $1 million
VESSEL MV MARIVIA
The Federal Government has fined the owners of MV Marivia, a vessel arrested for having on board two containers of toxic waste, $1 million.
The vessel, which originated from the United Kingdom, was intercepted by the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) and the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) at the Tin-Can Island Port, Lagos, South West Nigeria.
Addressing a news conference in Abuja, the Minister of Environment, Hajiya Hadiza Mailafia said that the vessel will be detained and the appropriate legal action will be taken against the owners of the vessel.
The names of the importers are Messrs Moronuk David and Bonik Investment.
The containers are said to contain used televisions, computers, central processing units, DVD’s, microwaves, pressing irons and stereos.
Hajiya Mailafia said that the electrical electronic equipment failed functionality test, which does not conform with the provisions of Harmful Wastes Act.
The Federal Government has ordered that the toxic waste laden containers on board MV Marivia Monrovia be shipped back to the port of origin in the U.K.
